High Wind

High Wind Warning (WARNING) — expires March 16, 2026 at 8:00 PM GMT+4

Areas affected: Haleakala Summit; Big Island Summit

High Wind Warning issued March 15 at 2:26PM HST until March 16 at 6:00AM HST by NWS Honolulu HI

  • WHAT…Southwest winds 40 to 50 mph with gusts up to 65 mph on Haleakala Summit. Southwest winds 50 to 80 mph with gusts up to 100 mph on the Big Island summits.

  • WHERE…Haleakala Summit and Big Island Summits.

  • WHEN…Until 6 AM HST Monday.

  • IMPACTS…Winds this strong can make driving and walking dangerous. The winds can forcefully open doors and damage hinges or slam doors shut, possibly causing injuries.

What to do: Motorists, especially those in high profile vehicles, are urged to drive with extreme caution. A High Wind Warning means that winds at the summits are expected to be at least 56 mph, with gusts over 66 mph. Take necessary precautions to protect property. Travel to summit areas should be delayed until winds subside.

Flood Watch issued March 15 at 1:59PM HST until March 16 at 6:00AM HST by NWS Honolulu HI

…FLOOD WATCH FOR MAUI COUNTY AND THE BIG ISLAND THROUGH TONIGHT…

  • WHAT…Flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible.

  • WHERE…The Big Island.

  • WHEN…Through late tonight.

  • IMPACTS…Flood prone roads and other low lying areas may be closed due to elevated runoff and overflowing streams. Urban areas may receive more significant flooding and property damage due to rapid runoff.

  • ADDITIONAL DETAILS…

  • With deep moisture in place, southwest winds will deliver periods of moderate to heavy rain to portions of Leeward Big Island through tonight. Saturated ground conditions will increase the risk for flash flooding.

What to do: You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should Flash Flood Warnings be issued.
